AJS Applauds Successful Effort to Defund Prevention and Public Health Fund
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Stephen DeMaura, President of Americans for Job Security, today issued the following statement regarding the "Interest Rate Reduction Act" (H.R. 4628), which extends current student loan rates without growing government by defunding the Prevention and Public Health Fund, a major component of Obamacare:
"The Interest Rate Reduction Act fails to address the systemic unsustainability of our higher education finance system. Addressing college affordability should be accomplished, not by making student debt less expensive as this bill would, but by addressing fundamental issues regarding the cost and results of our higher education system.
"The legislation does cover the associated costs of the program with significant spending reductions in a key program associated with Obamacare, the Prevention and Public Health Fund.
"The Prevention and Public Health Fund is an example of Washington at its worst. The program is little more than a slush fund that funded big-government allies, hiring lobbyists to advocate for higher taxes, job-killing regulations and greater government intervention in our lives.
"For the health of our economy and workforce, it is critical that we decrease the size and scope of government. While H.R. 4628 is not the perfect elimination of the Prevention and Public Health Fund, it is a significant move in the right direction."
